Instruments and small bands
The confederate bands were much smaller than their union counterparts. Because most of the famous and skilled musicians and instrument makers were in the north, Southern songs were generally "poorer". The instruments used were not as good quality. They were not as decorated as union instruments were.

Purposes
Similarly to the North, the Confederate Army had Buglers that would use their calls to give orders to the troops. Also like the union army, the drum line helped the soldiers march in line when marching.

Melodies and tunes
A lot of confederate songs had similar tunes to union songs because the south borrowed several songs and changed the lyrics. A famous example would be the southern version of the Battle Cry of Freedom, originally a very popular union song. However, unlike union songs, confederate songs were often more romantic, yet patriotic.
