There were more musicians in the north because they could afford the more expensive instruments and more of them. There was a wide variety of instruments used and each were decorated uniquely. Drums often had eagles and stripes to represent freedom.

Tunes and Melodies

Often Union songs were very upbeat and patriotic songs. They were encouraging and sentimental. Often the soldiers would sing such songs as they were marching.

Purposes
|
Union bands, just like Confederate ones, had specific jobs for those in the band. For example, a Bugler was considered a cavalry regiment's musician. A bugler's jobs was to notify the camps of certain orders using the distinguishing song of the Bugle. Also drum lines were very important to keep the beat while marching
